30 hands Learning is an app that would be fun for students to use to share their insight, learning, or a project. Take a look and let me know what you think!
Pros: Not limited to 30 second; can use photos taken from photo stream, including screen shot of white board; can write directly on photo to add details or accentuate details; uploads to YouTube, which can be set so viewers need a link, not publicly available in search; very easy to navigate within app to build your slideshow
Cons: Haven't found any yet!

Mrs. Kincer's class celebrated World Read Aloud Day 2014 by Skyping with Jena Ball, author, illustrator, and co-founder of CritterKin. Ms. Jena read us a book about a rescued dachshund named Ricky Bobby. She will follow up with a few more Skype sessions as we explore not only the world of writers and illustrators, but also a world filled with kindness and compassion as seen through the eyes of the many "mutts" in the CritterKin pack. Watch the video below for the heartwarming story Jena shared with us. Read more by following this link: http://critterkin.com/be-kind/critterkin-kids-flip-books/

O.M.G. I won tickets for the incredible Olympics! Do you want to know how to do amazing figure skating? First, you have to have the right skates. Second, you have to be flexible, and third, you have to be balanced. The equipment needed is ice skates and a snazzy outfit. Who could win a medal? You guessed - Gracie Gold could win a medal! I chose figure skating because it is so splendid to watch.

If I were to go to the Winter Olympics, I would love to see aerial skiing. The object of the game is doing a lot of jumps, tricks, sliding on rails, and going down big hills. The person who is likely to win a medal is the person who does the grooviest tricks and has the least mistakes. The equipment you need are skis, ski-wear, boots, and a helmet. I chose this sport because it sounds cool to watch them do awesome stunts. If we win or lose, it's always fun to watch aerial skiing!

If I won a ticket to the Olympics, I would be so excited to see my favorite sport, Ladies Figure Skating. Do you want to know how to do this sport? Well, I'll tell you. You need to hire a good coach. If you want to win, you have to practice long hours every day. You have to learn awesome jumps and high twirls while skating on the ice to lively music. The equipment that will be needed is music, a dress, blades, boots, blade covers, and an ice rink. Do you know who I think could win - Ashley Wagner! I hope she wins. Here is why I chose this sport. I chose this sport because it's interesting and the girls do the best routines. After watching Ladies Figure Skating, it makes me want to learn to ice skate.

It's a dream come true, I won tickets to watch freestyle skiing at the Olympics. I am excited to go to the freestyle skiing event. This is my first time going to the Olympics.
Freestyle skiing is a form of skiing which originally had three styles. They are aerials, moguls, and ski ballets. Today freestyle skiing includes aerials, moguls, ski cross, ski half pipe, and slope style.
Skiers need skis, boots, gloves, pants, and a jacket. I think that Tommy Moe may win the gold medal. I chose freestyle skiing because I think it would be so fun to go fast down hills. I also can't wait to see what styles the skiers perform. I really love this sport!

One of our favorite traditions in 3rd grade is our annual Publishing Party! We'll be presenting each student with the book he/she wrote and illustrated in March and April.
Due to a typically large turnout, we kindly request that you turn in an RSVP using the link to our invitation provided on the button below. This will allow us to reserve a special place for your 3rd grader and her/his guests. This is a special night for our young authors!

Winter Olympics
Our most recent POW involves writing in the expository genre. Students are writing to tell which sport in the Winter Olympics they would go watch if they had the opportunity. There is a bit or research involved as they'll also tell about the sport itself and who might have a chance to medal in Sochi. Have fun with this opportunity to think outside the box! {Remember, parents are taking a "back-seat" on POWs, stepping back from an active coaching role to allow us to see what our students can do when writing on their own.}
Our students are quite proficient in writing for Paragraph of the Week; they have all been trained and feel very confident! They all know they can write a main idea sentence, detail sentences, and a closing sentence that ties back to the main idea. These students already have experience with each of the 6 Traits of Writing: Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice, and Conventions. Now they can put these into practice! We've also had practice writing a Yes, Ma'am written response (Ma'am is an acronym for "me, author, author, me"), and information was sent home to give parents insight to what is expected when this strategy is used. We are thankful to the folks at Smekens Education for teaching us about this handy strategy!

For our final "hurrah," we like to do a form of Literature Circles that we call "Survivor." All of the books we select have a theme of survival. After selecting their top few books using a ballot, we group the kids into "tribes," and then the F-U-N begins! Tribes meet daily during small-group time to read and discuss their books, and we even throw in a few "tribal challenges" along the way. Tribes earn points during these competitions, as well as simply by having every member show up with their books and homework assignments. Tribes are docked points when someone doesn't do their reading or homework. Once the students take their final AR test on the books, we tabulate the tribe with the top comprehension average and award the final round of points. Which tribes will survive this year? Be sure to ask your child about this beginning May 7th!
